Custom

Fixed-price based on scope. Fully async.

  • Electrical Architecture Review
  • Wiring Harness & Cable Design
  • Custom scoping for unique projects
  • Complete documentation packages
  • Async delivery via shared workspace
  • Scope defined via async brief

Why not just hire a full-time electrical engineer?

A senior EE costs $150k–$200k/year plus benefits, equity, and overhead — and you may not have enough work to keep one busy full-time. PulseSpec gives you senior-level expertise on demand: use the retainer for ongoing support at a fraction of the cost, bring in project packages for the big deliverables, and pause when your workload slows down. You get the expertise without the overhead.

Engineering packages built for
startup speed

Every engagement is scoped, quoted, and delivered as a fixed-price package. You pay for outcomes — architecture documents, validated designs, and production-ready specifications — not hours.

Engineering expertise,
not overhead

PulseSpec was founded by Niklas, a senior electrical systems engineer with over 20 years of experience across the automotive EV, marine, offshore energy, and solar industries.

From designing vehicle electrical architectures and power distribution systems at EV startups to leading field engineering teams on offshore platforms, Niklas brings a rare combination of hands-on production experience and systems-level thinking.

PulseSpec exists because too many hardware startups hit the same avoidable problems: architectures that don't scale, prototype wiring that can't be manufactured, and electrical systems that weren't designed for production. These problems are expensive to fix late — and straightforward to prevent early.

Every PulseSpec engagement is handled directly by Niklas. No project managers, no junior engineers, no handoffs. Senior-level expertise from first call to final deliverable.

Common questions

If something isn't covered here, reach out and ask directly.

How does the engineering retainer work? +

The retainer gives you ongoing access to a senior electrical systems engineer for $4,000/month. Submit requests one at a time via Trello — schematic reviews, component selection, power budget checks, vendor evaluations, spec questions. Most tasks are delivered within 48–72 hours. Submit unlimited requests per month, pause billing anytime, and cancel with no long-term commitment.

What's the difference between the retainer and a project package? +

The retainer is for ongoing, shorter-cycle engineering tasks — the kind of questions and reviews that come up regularly as you build. Project packages are for larger, self-contained deliverables like a full architecture review or complete harness design. Many clients use both: the retainer for day-to-day support, and a project package when they need a major deliverable.

What kind of requests can I submit on the retainer? +

Anything that a senior electrical systems engineer would handle: schematic reviews, connector and component selection, power budget analysis, cable specification questions, vendor comparisons, quick design checks, BOM reviews, interface specification questions, and more. If a request is too large for the retainer format, I'll let you know and we can scope it as a project instead.

How does the pause feature work? +

Billing cycles run on a 31-day period. If you use the service for 20 days and then pause, you'll have 11 days of service remaining to use whenever you're ready. This way you only pay for engineering support when you actually need it — no wasted spend during quiet periods.

What industries does PulseSpec serve? +

PulseSpec provides electrical systems engineering for EV and automotive startups, clean energy companies (solar, energy storage), marine electrification, and general hardware startups transitioning from prototype to production.

What is included in an Electrical Architecture Review? +

A full review of your vehicle or system electrical architecture including power budget analysis, interface specification review, risk assessment with prioritized recommendations, and architecture documentation with block diagrams.

How does fixed-price engineering work? +

Each engagement begins with an async scoping brief to define deliverables. You receive a fixed quote based on complexity — no hourly billing, no scope surprises. You pay for outcomes, not hours. If the scope changes during the project, we discuss and re-quote before proceeding.

Can you help with prototype-to-production electrical design? +

Yes — this is a core specialty. PulseSpec helps hardware startups transition from prototype wiring to production-ready harness designs, including connector selection, DFM review, BOM generation, and manufacturing documentation packages.

How long does a typical engagement take? +

An architecture review typically takes 2–3 weeks. Wiring harness design packages run 4–8 weeks depending on complexity. Exact timelines are confirmed during the scoping phase.

Do you work with early-stage startups? +

Absolutely. PulseSpec works best with Seed to Series B hardware startups that have a working prototype and are preparing for production. Getting the electrical architecture right at this stage saves significant time and cost downstream.

Let's scope your project

Tell me about your system and what you need. I'll respond within one business day with initial thoughts and next steps — typically an async scoping brief at no charge.
